Smokestacks on the Lakefront: The History of Milwaukee’s South Shore

September 15th, 2022

Milwaukee’s South Shore communities — Walker’s Point, Bay View, St. Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee, and Oak Creek — are different expressions of the same theme. Just as the North Shore became a zone of affluence rooted in the Yankee Hill neighborhood, the South Shore became a stronghold of industry — and industrial workers — anchored by a pioneer Bay View iron mill. From hams in Cudahy to mining shovels in South Milwaukee, it’s all one fascinating story. This free program is sponsored by the St. Francis Historical Society.
