Brewer’s Hill and Harambee

May 3rd

As part of Historic Milwaukee Inc’s. 43rd annual Spaces and Traces tour, I’ll be exploring the history of two fascinating Milwaukee neighborhoods. Brewer’s Hill is one of the city’s oldest settlements, rising from a riverside canal that powered Milwaukee’s first industrial district and evolving into a showcase of economic diversity. Harambee was the next stop north as the North Side grew, and it became a comparable community of castles and cottages, relatively speaking. Both neighborhoods began with strong German accents and became African-American strongholds, and both are active centers of historic preservation activity. The 1 PM talk is an integral part of Spaces and Traces, and tickets will not be available separately. Visit the Historic Milwaukee Inc. website to register and get more information.
