Milwaukee and Prohibition: How the National Drought Affected America’s Beer Capital

As the city that made beer famous, Milwaukee was more severely impacted by Prohibition than most places. The long national drought shut down a major industry, deprived the city of both jobs and tax revenue, and forced ordinary citizens to the wrong side of the law. The fourteen-year dry spell was by turns infuriating, tragic, and hilarious, and I’ll cover all its dimensions in this story of the “noble experiment.” Stay tuned for details.
